The annual scholarship is awarded equally to a recipient from each organization based on financial need.

NSBE, with more than 35,700 members nationwide, is one of the largest student-governed organizations in the country. The organization's mission is "to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community."

SIS was founded on Michigan Tech's campus in 1991 by 22 women who were in search of a sisterhood that would last throughout their college years and beyond, and allow them to serve their immediate community to provide a better environment for everyone. SIS promotes sisterhood, academic excellence, diversity, and above all, serving the community.

Both organizations are open to students of all ethnicities and genders.
