Seaman Mineral Museum features two great mineral collections and outstanding exhibits—both inside and out. <p>Your gift impacts the hearts and minds of every visitor who sees our museum exhibits.</p> One of the most gratifying experiences for us to witness at the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum is the look on people’s faces when they first enter the exhibit hall. As the world of minerals opens up to them for the first time, they are likewise opened up, and transported, in a sense, back to the mindset of youth, seeing the world for the first time, again. And then the inevitable exclamation, "Wow! I had no idea." This is the intangible aspect of our mission—to create this opening of wonder—that makes learning natural, memorable, and the earth’s mysteries even deeper. We invite all who are interested in minerals to join us in this mission to preserve and present this facet of natural history to visitors now and in the future. Beginning at an undergraduate level, students participate in research and work with industry partners.</p> Located on the Keweenaw Peninsula, surrounded by Lake Superior, Michigan Tech blends learning, innovation, research, and entrepreneurship that fuel economic and social development in Michigan, our nation, and our world. The convergence of bright minds, state-of-the-art facilities, and complex problems creates an environment we define as a center of excellence. Our centers of excellence are research hubs, including:<ul><li>The <strong>Ford Center and Forest,</strong> an all-encompassing 3,500 acres of pristine, diverse forests home to the only remaining university full-semester residential field program in North America</li><li>The <strong>Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC),</strong> home to state-of-the-art laboratories where biologists, geologists, engineers, chemists, remote-sensing specialists, and computer scientists work together along Michigan Tech's Innovation Shore. The GLRC is highlighting opportunities to support students so they can gain valuable hands-on experiences collaborating with research scientists and engineers on the forefront of marine technology and environmental biotechnology.</li><li>The <strong>Keweenaw Research Center,</strong> a multidisciplinary research center on 900 acres of proving grounds that has been active in military, industrial, and commercial vehicle applications for over 60 years</li><li>The <strong>Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI),</strong> which focuses on multidisciplinary technology development and research to understand natural and human-made environments through innovation, education, and collaboration</li></ul> They also include broader academic units, such as our <a href="https://give.mtu.edu/g/collegesandschools">departments and colleges</a>. Within these centers, students learn how to succeed—and how to rebound from setbacks—preparing them for industry and the challenges they'll face as professionals.

Created in honor of Robert and Ellen Thompson in 2023 by a group of graduates, your support of the Robert and Ellen Thompson Student Fund helps third- and fourth-year CEGE students (with a Pavement emphasis) achieve their educational goals.

Continue Bob and Ellen Thompson's legacy of giving back, to change the lives of Michigan Tech students. <p>Created in honor of Robert and Ellen Thompson in 2023 by a group of graduates, your support of the <strong>Robert and Ellen Thompson Student Fund</strong> helps third- and fourth-year CEGE students (with a Pavement emphasis) achieve their educational goals. </p> About Robert and Ellen Thompson Robert (Bob) and Ellen Thompson believe in the power of education, commitment to a cause, and hard work. Together since college, they have embarked on both a personal and entrepreneurial journey—starting a family, founding and growing several businesses, and building Michigan’s largest asphalt paving company, Thompson-McCully Co. 40 years after its inception, the Thompsons sold the business in 1999, shared the proceeds of the sale with employees, and formed the Thompson Foundation. The Thompson Foundation helped to start the Pavement, Design, Construction, and Materials Enterprise at Michigan Tech. This unique Enterprise program is one of 26 at Michigan Tech that provides financial support to students and a practical education that combines engineering and business. With assistance from leaders in the asphalt industry, the program requires students to work as teams on projects and present findings to the board in a ‘Shark Tank’-like atmosphere. The process helps students form life-long connections with fellow students and sets them up for future success. Providing Scholarships through the Robert and Ellen Thompson Student Fund In 2023, a group of graduates worked with the University to start this scholarship fund in Robert and Ellen’s name (Robert and Ellen Thompson Student Fund) to pay their generosity forward. Each scholarship that is given helps a current student achieve their educational goals with the hope that they will help others in the future when they are able to do so. Scholarships are awarded to third- and fourth-year students who are pursuing a degree within the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering.

The Enterprise Program

Enterprise is when students work in teams on real projects, with real clients, in an environment that's more like a business than a classroom. With coaching and guidance from faculty members, our 26 Enterprise teams work to invent products, provide services, and pioneer solutions.
