The rural community of Santa Barbara, Bolivia, is connected to the city of Buena Vista by a single road. The road is currently composed of loose sand and dirt. Every year in the rainy season, heavy rains cause the loose sand and dirt to wash out. Driving on the washed-out road is very difficult, if not impossible, for community members. Not being able to drive on the road reduces access to education, health care, and food—or causes community members to take the risk of driving on a dangerous road.
Michigan Tech students in the Engineers Without Borders program will be traveling to Bolivia in August to work on the road, which will result in fewer dangerous accidents and better access to important education, health care, and food. Additionally, students will gain critical skills that will make them more well-rounded individuals as they help communities in need.
