Help Public Safety Purchase a Facility Dog

You can help empower victims of crime and trauma by giving them access to a professionally trained support dog.

Michigan Tech's Department of Public Safety and Police Services (Public Safety) is gearing up to add a facility dog to the team. Having a facility dog on campus will empower students who have been victims of crime and help them cope with the stress they may face as they work through the criminal justice system. A facility dog differs from other police animals in that the dog's primary purpose is to provide companionship to vulnerable individuals in legal settings, assist the police in speaking to people after experiencing a traumatic event, and help victims speak to police who may be intimidated or nervous about the investigative process. Many victims of crime find the criminal justice process intimidating, which may deter them from contacting law enforcement for assistance. Through the facility dog program, Public Safety hopes to give students the courage to participate in conduct and criminal proceedings while reducing their anxiety.

Bringing a facility dog to Michigan Tech aligns with Public Safety's mission to protect and serve our community's quest for a peaceful and safe existence, free from fear, and with democratic values applied equally to all constituents. Michigan Tech would be the first university in the Upper Peninsula to offer this service, joining hundreds of other institutions across the United States who have seen the benefits. Public Safety seeks to be leaders in their field by offering a service many others currently do not have... keeping with the Husky tradition of leading the way.

Public Safety is asking for assistance to secure funding to start the program, which includes:

  1. Working with a nationally certified program to purchase a dog
  2. Having trainers assist with training the handlers
  3. Ensuring all the dog's current and future needs are met (vet bills, housing and transportation equipment, handling equipment, etc.)

Your gift allows entry into a drawing to possibly become a member of the "Naming Committee", a group of individuals who will work with Public Safety to determine the dog's name. All donors will be given the opportunity to meet the dog as well!
